The Giant That Has Uber Trembling — Discover the Lyft Taxi in South Kent, CT
Ten years ago, there were exactly five ways for most people to navigate major cities: By walking, by biking, by bus, by subway, or by taxi. However, for cross-town trips, walking was out. LIkewise biking, for most professionals who couldn’t very well arrive at their appointments covered in sweat or dripping rain.
In the last two years, ride-sharing service Uber has completely upended the marketplace, fundamentally changing the way professionals navigate their cities. It’s a remarkably simple concept: Instead of buying and maintaining a fleet of taxis, ride-sharing services leverage the ubiquity of smartphones to enable individuals to use their private vehicles as taxis.
And it’s working: Uber was the first major ride-sharing service, and it quickly grew. For example, consider this: in their first 30 months of operation, Uber had 20,000 drivers in Los Angeles alone. And for a time, Uber enjoyed the security of being the first and, essentially, only major player in an emerging market. That all changed with the advent of Lyft taxi service. Like Uber, Lyft uses private drivers and private vehicles. Both services screen drivers and require vehicle inspections. However, there are some important differences.
One of the most important differences is price. In general, both companies are similarly-priced. However, Uber uses a model called “surge pricing,” which can see peak rates go as high as eight times higher than the baseline rate during times or at locations of heavy traffic. Contrast that with Lyft taxi, which rarely sees peak pricing more than three times the published baseline rate.
Lyft also seems to cater more to those with a fun spirit: The cars often have sporty pink mustaches and the app’s functionality is a little less reserved than Uber’s, which seems to be aiming for a more executive, highbrow approach. Lyft also allows drivers to start as young as 21, whereas Uber requires drivers to be at least 23. And whereas Uber operates more like a traditional taxi, it’s not uncommon for a Lyft driver to be a bit friendlier and invite the rider to sit in the front seat with them.
The two companies are locked in a fight for customers in most major US cities, which can only benefit consumers as they both fight to lower prices. Lyft is booming at the moment, with the company reporting 12% more rides nationwide in July than they delivered in June.
You can try both services for yourself to see which you prefer: both apps are available in both iOS and Android versions, and both services typically offer new customers a promotional credit for signing up, enabling them to take their first for free. So check both services out and see what you think!
